An
adviser helps you plan and complete your educational experiences.
This person will help you develop long range plans, select and
schedule classes, assist with problems, and help with other academic
concerns. Spend time with this person discussing your interests
and goals.
Feel free
to stop by the Department to see your adviser, but it is best to schedule
an appointment. You can make an appointment by calling or e-mailing
your adviser.
Advising
Responsibilities
Role
of the Adviser
Each student is assigned an AEE
academic adviser upon admission to the Department. The adviser helps
the student plan an academic program and register for classes.
Sometimes,
students may propose actions with which the academic adviser does not
agree. In such cases, advisers are responsible for informing students
of the appropriate course of action. However,
students make the final decisions related to the course scheduling
and program planning. Consequently, students must assume primary responsibility
for the decisions that are made.
Responsibilities
of the Adviser
- Be
knowledgeable about program(s) about which he/she advises.
- Inform
the advisee of degree requirements.
- Communicate
and emphasize the advisee's responsibility for satisfying degree requirements.
- Assist
the student in career planning.
- Be familiar
with published academic rules and regulations of the University and
maintain an up-to-date academic advising reference file containing current
program area, college, and University materials pertinent to advising.
- Assist
the advisee in planning a suitable schedule of classes, at least one
semester in advance.
- Establish
and maintain adequate office hours throughout the semester with particular
emphasis given to orientation, preregistration, registration, and the
drop/add periods.
- Inform
the advisee of adviser's and advisee's responsibilities in the advising
process.
- Keep
records of the advisee's progress, including transcripts and grade reports,
current schedule, student progress record, degree audits, etc.
- Discuss
with the advisee his/her academic performance and the implications of
that performance.
- Refer
the advisee to appropriate sources of information and services.
Responsibilities
of the Advisee
- Obtain
a list of the academic and occupational requirements from the adviser
and use it to monitor progress toward fulfilling all degree requirements.
- Be aware
that primary responsibility for selecting courses and meeting degree
requirements is that of the advisee. The adviser can suggest, recommend,
and remind the student of rules and requirements, but the advisee has
the primary responsibility for meeting program and degree requirements.
- Know
the adviser's office hours.
- Inform
the adviser of changes in plans that directly affect academic performance
and educational goals (e.g., finances, job, health, academic performance,
changes in academic and career goals, etc.).
- To plan
a suitable schedule of classes at least one semester in advance with
the help of the adviser. It is advisable to formulate a long-term schedule
of all courses to be taken while in the program.
- To be
familiar with the published rules and regulations of the University.
- To discuss
academic performance and its implications with the adviser.
- To follow
through on referrals made by the adviser.
