Youth and Family Education Minor (YFE)

Designed to help prepare students for a career in cooperative extension and other nonformal education programs, this minor includes course work from several disciplines and addresses student needs in areas such as nonformal education methods, adult education, leadership, youth programs, and communication methods and media.

Students are required to complete 18 credits from a list of recommended courses. The core program consists of 15 credits. Students are expected to strengthen their expertise by taking at least 3 additional credits from the courses recommended. A grade of C or better is required for all course.

Procedures for Enrollment:

Students may apply for admission to theYouth and Family Education minor by downloading and submitting an application for Entrance to Minor. Approval of the student’s major program advisor is also required. Students will be advised as to course offerings and requirements of the program.

  • AEE 360 (3) - Leadership Development for Small Groups (OR)
  • AEE 460 (3) - Foundations of Leadership Development (OR)
  • AEE 465 (3) - Leadership Practices: Power, Influence, and Impact
  • AEE 450 (3) - Program Design and Delivery
  • YFE 455 (3) - 4-H/Extension Youth Programs and Volunteer Management
  • YFE 495 (6) - Internship

Supporting Courses and Related Areas: (3 credits) (Sem. 1-8)

  • YFE 295 (1-2) - Observations of Cooperative Extension Service Programs
  • AEE 440 (3) - Communications Methods and Media
  • ADTED 460 (3) - Introduction to Adult Education
  • YFE 496 (1-3) - Independent Studies in Extension Education
  • YFE 497 (1-9) - Special Topics

Course selection may be influenced by the experience and educational background of the student. Individual programs are determined jointly by the student and the academic adviser.
