The Tappi Nonwovens Division announces a scholarship in the amount of $1000 to 
an undergraduate student for the 1998-99 school year.  The student must be in 
a program preparatory toward a career in the nonwovens industry, have a grade 
point of at least 3.0 and be recommended or endorsed by an instructor or 
faculty member.  I have an application if you know of an interested youth.

First grade teachers can obtain a free dental health education kit that 
includes teachers guide, video, sing-along cassette, and toothbrushes and 
paste for an entire classroom or school of first-grade teachers.

Check your kitchen shop or department stores because soon you'll find they are 
selling a large plastic knife called a lettuce knife or a "Bakeware Buddy".  
The knives sell for around $5.50 and prevent browning on the edges of lettuce 
and are useful to prevent scratching of brownie pans, etc.  They are also a 
little safer for children to use for these applications.

Don't forget the free useful booklets from the Consumer Information Center.

The booklets cover children, parenting, employment, cars,
foods and nutrition, health, medical problems, housing, home improvement and 
safety financial planning, travel and much, much more!

A great little book to teach beginners, especially children, how to knit is 
KIDS KNITS by Glenwell Associates, $9.95.  Ask for it at your bookstore or 
library.  Another book--more expensive is Learn to Knit Afghan Book by Barbara 
Walker ($28.00).  The premise of Barbara's book is that you do 63 sample 
squares that lead you through all kinds of technique with the end result a 
beautiful, useful afghan!

Sewing Prose has a new Level oriented program for youth in Directions (TM) 
Sewing Adventures for Children.  At the start youth learn machine and tool 
skills, then progress to:  cutting and sewing straight lines, cutting and 
sewing straight seams and curves, knit on serger and regular machines, 
pockets, facings, flat fell seams, zippers, buttons, and gathers, collars,

Another clothing/sewing related book is, "The Day My Blankie Became a Vest".  
This story is detailed with illustrations that will take adults and children

All of us should think of the most ergonomic way of accomplishing various 
tasks, including sewing!  A company in Colorado provides tools to help sewers 
prevent fatigue.  The tools are fairly expensive, but we can benefit from

USA Today is looking for verbal teen-agers (high school freshman, sophomores 
or juniors) to serve on its Teen Panel.  The panel discusses various topics 
and applicants should address these issues:

   What are the most pressing concerns of teens?
   What is the key to a good relationship with parents?
   What don't parents understand about teens?
   What is the dating scene like at your school?

The coordinators of the "Original Sewing and Craft Expo" are encouraging 4-H

raffles to use as interest getters aboard the bus.

Aimed at teaching beginners, "Keeping You in Stitches" was uplinked to Public 
Television in March.  Sewing-expert Sally Cowan hosts the series, with the 
prime objective of enabling people of all ages and abilities to learn how to 
sew by hand and machine, while accommodating both abilities and disabilities.  
Check your local listings, because if it isn't offered in the spring, they may 
air it in the summer or early fall.

You may want to let your textile science leaders know of a new book, Quick 
Sewing Projects from Placemats by Susan Beck, as it contains many easy to make 
projects that will get 4-H members started.  The book is published by Sterling 
and sells for $24.95.  If your library doesn't have it ask them to obtain it 
or to interlibrary loan it for you.
