Halloween Safety and Costumes
Halloween gives children a chance to be anyone or anything their imaginations
can come up with. The challenge for parents is to make it a wonderful, rather
than a scary, experience. Use these ten guidelines to ensure a happy Halloween
for your child:
- Provide kids a flashlight when they go trick-or-treating
- Decorate costumes, bags, or sacks with reflective tape
- Purchase flame-retardant costumes
- To avoid falls, dress children in clothes and shoes that fit
- Use face paint or buy masks that do not restrict vision. Test paint on a small area to make sure that the child is not allergic to any of the ingredients
- Teach kids to stay on sidewalks, where they are much less likely to stumble over items that can't be seen in the dark
- Remove 'stumbling blocks' from your porch or sidewalk, i.e., tools and ladders
- Caution children against running while eating candy. Hard candy, especially can easily choke a young child or ruin fillings
- Look over all treats that have been collected; discard anything that's questionable
- Homemade treats
may spoil quickly; toss anything that could lead to food poisoning
