Explanation of Terms Used in Judging Outfits
An outfit may not have all items in each of
the judging categories. The score should reflect the total category value and
not reduce the score for items not appearing on an outfit.
Appearance (25 points)
- Shows clean, well-groomed appearance
- Well groomed; attractive hair, facial hair appropriately cared for, hands
clean, nails neat, and shoes clean.
- Appropriate under garments
- Underwear supports the figure giving shape to garments. Choices should not
be distracting to the garment, i.e., cause creases or bulges. Colors or prints
do not show through garment.
- Poised with good posture
- Confident and at ease; responding enthusiastically to judges remarks and
questions. Stands tall with head erect, and body weight balanced in a natural
stance.
- Appropriate expression and pride
in garment - A smile adds a self-assured confidence, shows personal
style and models the garment to its best advantage.
- Relates well to audience/judges
- Modeling ability - Smooth
turns, shows off garment and 4-H member to best advantage
Fit (15 points)
- Overall a smooth fit with an absence
of fitting wrinkles or twisted seams - Garment hangs smoothly over
the entire body with no pulling of fabric or seams.
- Adequate ease for person and design
- Ease allowed in proportion with the style and design created.
- Correct seam position - Seams
are properly positioned on the body; lengthwise seams hang perpendicular to
the floor; shoulder seams lie flat; armhole seam is suitably located; shaped
seams placed so the fullest part of the garment is located at the fullest
part of the body; the waistline correctly placed.
- Balanced garment - Hanging
equal distance from legs, side to side, front to back. Finished garment length
equal distance from the floor and hangs away from the body an even amount
all the way around or as appropriate to costume design.
- Correct grainline position for design
- Fabric cut on grain; plaids and designs matched; if a napped fabric is used,
the nap should run in the same direction.
Design (15 points)
- Total
outfit looks "smart" and put together - Gives the appearance of blending together.
- Style and fabric suited to wearer's
body type, using these principles of design: balance, unity, emphasis
and rhythm.
- Pleasing proportion to wearer
- Garment design helps to enhance the balance of the figure.
- Effective use of color, texture,
line - Appropriate for the garment and design.
- Common theme/harmony in outfit
- The outfit carries out the purpose for which the outfit is to be worn in
relation to fabric choice, color, and style.
- Appropriate pattern and fabric coordination
- The fabric texture and weight of the fabric suitable for the pattern style.
Fashion (15 points)
- Use of new fashion ideas-color, line,
texture, trims, style, accessories - A sense of fashion displayed
in garment's style, color,fabric, texture, trim, and accessories. Chose compatible
fabrics to pattern.
- Becoming to individual.
- Accessories coordinate with outfit
- Good in color, texture, and complete the outfit. Appropriate jewelry enhances
the garment.
- Appropriate to individual
- Outfit looks like it belongs on the individual.
Construction (30 points) (As it relates
to outside appearance only.)
Judges may ask 4-H member to lift a hem or a belt or show the lining on a jacket
(with a blouse, dress or shirt underneath), but may not themselves touch the
4-H member or their garment. The purpose of this category is to judge construction
as it relates to the outside appearance. Inside construction is judged at exhibits
at county and regional fairs and at State Farm Show, but not at the State Fashion
Review.
- Level of difficulty - Consider
the type of fabric(s) chosen and the ease with which it can be handled; the
pattern and the amount of construction detail involved.
- Smooth outside appearance
- Even seam stitching, no puckering
- Techniques used are appropriate
in relation to fabric, garment design and style.
- Accuracy in grain, stitching, gathering,
matching designs, even widths - Details straight and even.
- Facings, interfacing, and linings
are appropriate for fabric and design - Hand of interfacing suitable
for the areas needing adding body and reinforcement; smooth and inconspicuous
application.
- Edges of collars, lapels, cuffs,
pockets - Smooth, even and flat. Correct placement for neckline and
armseye. Adjustments for uneven shoulder made.
- Absence of any kind of bulk,
seams appear to be graded.
- Inconspicuous hems - Handwork
neatly accomplished, turned under areas even in width with edges neatly done,
a smooth non-curled appearance. Hems planned in connection with fabric design,
if any.
- Trim appropriately placed and attached
- Trim in good proportion to the body and design of the outfit and compatible
with surrounding fabric.
- Darts smooth merging into fabric
- Nonpuckered darts with ends stitched so no dimples occur at points.
Darts stitched so they conform to body fullness. If no darts, fullness that
is adjusted by gathers, pleats or other features should be appropriate, well
spaced, and well done. Curves in garment conform to body curves.
- Fastenings neat, secure, and appropriate
for fabric and design - Quality of work in selection and application
of fasteners and other notions.
- Seams appropriately finished with
no gaps or tears. Top-stitching neat and even. Treatment of seam
should relate to fabric and garment design; edges.
- All other details neat, secure, and
appropriate.
- Well pressed - Pressing
in the construction process to give a professional look, no imprints of seams,
hems, darts showing on right side, scorch marks, etc. Take into account that
members may be sitting in garments for classes before they are judged.
