PA EFNEP Conference Youth NotesUpdated for 2004
These are the inputs provided by NEAs and others at the 1997 PA EFNEP Conference in Reading PA. The names have been removed from the "good ideas" section so that curriculum committees could look at the input objectively. Recognition will be given to those with the "ideas" in an upcoming PENpage document. Thanks to all who participated.

- Ideas for last day of foods project group.
- Single Sheet Handouts, a recipe plus basic facts
- Easier reading for the children. Single sheets...recipes, games, songs, easy projects.
- Funds to get the kids graduating gifts. Because round-up is not very popular with my Hispanic kids, they don't want to spend money on it.
- Handout to make your own games.
- Single sheets for games, coloring, puzzles, easy projects for support of the lesson, food safety.
- Handouts to make your own games.
- Additional alternatives for foods contests at local, state, and regional levels.
- Single sheet handouts for individuals in summer feeding sites.
- Single sheets updated.
- Kitchen safety hand-out.
- Revised super slim and the bad gang film strip.
- I am interested in being on a committee to develop curriculum.
- I would like to review "Getting into Food Mood"
- Table Setting and Table Manners
- Craft ideas for activities
- Foods to build strengths and endurance for children when playing sports.
- Any comic books or puzzles and games dealing with nutrition.
Need book and projects for older children 14-18 year olds with short attention spans, emotional and behavioral problems and average to poor reading or comprehension. They like things that give a quick result and are not too childish. Are not attentive enough for paperwork, most games or projects that are messy. They do like food and cooking projects as long as they get to eat it.For future conferences would love to see demos of new projects and clever ideas that inspire us and will motivate the youth.
Adventure with foods is very dull and hard for children to understand. They get bored with it very fast. We could get like a coloring book with foods for them to color and learn to recognize when they see it.Questions?
- Could you make available the youth materials/handouts from the Michigan/Iowa, Wisconsin curriculum?
- Can some of the old ERIB2 (2nd edition) handouts be looked at as handouts.
- Can the flip charts for workshops be considered?
- Is the video tape the only leader's guide?
- How can I get Team Up at Home the Team Nutrition Activity booklet?
Problems with 4-H Materials:
- Recipes in new 4-H projects are expensive. I am not happy with 2 year 4-H program. Too many projects go uncompleted. Food safety experiment activities in new curriculum last 1 to 2 weeks with members needing to view experiment every day. This is impossible. We don't meet every day of the week.
- I don't like using them too much. I think the kids find them boring. They like hands-on things. I like some new ideas and new recipes, also. I've used the Team Nutrition and love it! We used it in 3 elementary school, grades 1-6 and it went well!
- I have been using as a supplement to Adventures with Foods, Keeping Foods Safety handouts, recipes for peanut butter balls, fruit salad, blank food pyramid (so the kids can use to put stickers in).
Ideas: Food Olympics-Food Groups
- Fruit Loops-Close eyes-smell and then run to the table and pick out the actual fruit.
- Coffee Can and Sock Activity: Cut sock and put it over can. Let child put hand in can and figure out what kind of fruit or vegetable is in the can.
- Community Garden (Team Nutrition)
- Health Fair (Team Nutrition)
- EFNEP 4-H Club (Cameron County Chefs)
- Catered 4-H Recognition Banquet Using Recipes from Food & Fitness and Fun
- Contact paper with backing is great for table covering.
- 4-H Activity Day, bring in 4-H Clubs for 4 hours, showing EFNEP clubs what is available.
I revised the 4-H score sheet for the Adventures with Foods and changed the score descriptions to suit the classroom. Can be used with Food and Fitness for Fun, also.
I have developed several games around Nutrition: My latest game is $10,000 pyramid. Last year's game is 4-H Feud. Also, food bingo goes over well and "The Price is Right" grocery game I made a couple years back and I have the Jeopardy game.
Food, fun and fitness fairs--5 stations with different nutrition activities.
Children have fun using my 4-H stamp applied to their schedule calendar sheets.
Dinner meetings for teens--use supper hour for teen club planning and discussion, etc. and have the youth plan, buy and prepare and cook the meal that they have during the meeting.
Proud of:
- Working with 3rd and 4th graders in Mifflin/Juniata counties in conjunction with Lori.
- Working with handicapped children in special needs center.
- Helping Girl Scouts receive their badge and enroll them in 4-H.
